Our family welcomed boy #3 this morning at 8:13 a.m. after just over 12 hours of labor. I woke up feeling a little off yesterday and Reid was super clingy. By about 7 p.m. I was pretty sure we would be making a visit to the hospital during the night. Mom, Michaela and I ran to Walmart for a few groceries and stopped for frozen custard on the way home. I made it just a few bites into my custard when we got home before I decided it was time to grab our bags and head in to the hospital.
Once we got into our room around 11 p.m. the nurses started monitoring baby and me to see if it was the real deal before admitting us. Around 1 a.m. we were admitted and the contractions were getting pretty strong. Kalven's mom, my mom and my sister Michaela joined us at this point in case things started moving quickly. I requested to have an epidural placed as soon as my blood work came back so I could get some rest through the remainder of the night. The nurse anesthetist showed up at 3:50 a.m. and immediately started working to place the epidural. Almost 40 minutes later she was still unsuccessful and I was in agony. She called the anesthesiologist to come in and give it a try. He got to my room a few minutes later and placed the epidural within a minute of prepping me. Once the medication started working I was dilated to 7 cm and we all decided to try to get some sleep until I was fully dilated.
At 6:30 a.m. the nurse came in to check on me and I had only progressed to 8 cm because my water hadn't broken. Dr. Liu came in to break my water around 7:20 a.m. and told us that I'd probably be ready to push in an hour. Before long I could tell it was time even through the epidural, so the nurse snagged Dr. Liu and sure enough, it was time to push. We met our newest addition only 2 contractions and three pushes later. Our third son weighed in at 9 pounds, 8 ounces and is 21 inches long. He has a full head of dark, super soft hair.
Kalven J seems to think he's pretty great and Reid isn't quite sure what to think of him yet. He did share lots of kisses with him while he visited us in the hospital today, but his kisses are anything but gentle right now.
We haven't named him yet. Kalven and I are just enjoying snuggling him and trying to figure out which name will suit him best. Here are some pictures from baby #3's birthday!
